7 essential skincare principles you should know to kick-start your skincare journey

We get it. There are thousands of skincare influencers that are telling you that this product works better than others while another influencer tells you “you must add this to your skincare routine”. It is easy to get caught up in all of the noise. The truth is there is no full-proof skincare routine that everyone should use or a must-have product suitable for everyone. The most important thing is educating yourself and knowing what is right for you.

Whatever nonsense you see on the internet, let’s put them aside. Here, we are sharing with you the 7 most essential things you really need to know before building that skincare routine that really works best for you.

1. Know your Skin Type

We’ve talked about this in one of our articles. Knowing your skin type is the most important thing to start off with. Once you know what your skin type is, skincare shopping can be made much easier. You will know what ingredients to look out for and which to avoid. However, like we’ve mentioned, everyone’s skin is unique. Just because you and your sister has oily skin, doesn’t mean you both can use the same products!

2. Keep it Simple

All of our social media platforms have been telling us that we need to buy all of the latest skincare products. However, do not be fooled. If someone tells you their skincare routine is 10 steps long and it takes them 1 hour to get it done, run. Your skincare routine should be simple. Something you know you can do in under 10 minutes and does not empty your wallets to maintain every month. Besides, over using multiple products does more harm than good to your skin, considering you wouldn’t know what ingredients can or cannot be mixed.

3. Never Skip Sunscreen

This is one thing even we are guilty of sometimes. But the biggest thing that we always remind our readers. TRY, not to skin your sunscreen. The sun’s UV rays are one of the worst things our skin has to battle everyday. It is the one thing that causes the most damage to our skin, thus, we have to prevent the damage as much as we can. We are quite lucky that most of our makeup or skincare does have sunscreen formulated in them, however, that little bit is not enough. Prevention is always better than cure friends! So always wear sunscreen, even if you’re gonna be indoors all day.

4. Be Gentle with Your Skin

We know how you’d be washing your face when you’re not looking. Our skin is a delicate part of our body. It faces the world head-on and thus, we should do our part to protect it. Avoid harsh products like alcohols or crazy wipes and stop using abrasive exfoliators. The last thing we need to do is to destroy our Skin Barrier (another topic to get into). Be nice to your skin!

5. Feed your Body Well

What you do to your body on the inside will most definitely be reflected on the outside. You’ll treat your skin to the nicest skincare products so why would you waste the effort and engage in a horrible diet! We know it can be hard, but excessive sugars and salt will show up on your skin as inflammation or puffiness. So, don’t let all our hard work go to waste. Drink up, hydrate with WATER and stay away from that bag of chips and instant noodles. Moderation is key both for yourself on the inside and out.

6. Consistency is Key

There is no life saving product that can make your skin look glowy overnight. Most products take 4-6 weeks for it to really be effective. Just because it did not work in the next morning after using it, does not mean it belongs in the trash. Lock in, stay loyal and try it out for a few more weeks. Be consistent in your routine and give it a chance to show you what it can do. Your skin needs time to adjust same as you do in a new environment.

7. Listen to yourself

This is the hardest part, drowning out the noise of over-consumption and retail therapy but, not every thing that is pushed to you belongs in your cart so delete it this instant! The only person who knows your skin is you. We all have different goals when it comes to our skin so, do not buy into everything you see on the internet. As always, you should stay educated, do your own research and make your own decisions. You decide what is best for your skin.
